A Guys Guide to Hebrews: Don’t Drift Away (2:1-18)

It might surprise you to hear about the longest winning streak in the history of sports. It does not belong to the University of California Los Angeles men’s basketball teams under John Wooden. It does not belong to the New York Yankees, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics, the Dallas Cowboys. It was not accomplished by the University of Notre Dame, the University of Texas, or any other major university. The longest winning streak in the history of sports is held by the New York Yacht Club and its streak of winning what today we know as the America’s Cup extended an amazing 132years.

The America’s Cup is a grueling, demanding race that demands that a crew of well-trained sailors execute an almost flawless race to defeat their competitors. The least little slip up can be the difference between winning and losing the cup. A ship that is slightly off-course is a ship that will be very far behind at the end of the day.

The writer of the book of Hebrews knew the risks and challenges of sailing well. In the first century sailing was not something for racing teams supported by billionaire sponsors. It was something that was essential for many to make a living, and for transportation. Those living in the first-century knew that a ship that was drifting away could mean the loss of one’s ability to make an income, or a destination missed.

Believers today can often take their salvation for granted. Because salvation is made available by God free, it can easily result in a lazy group of people. Salvation, however, is hard work. Ensuring that one stays secured to the dock of God’s truth is a full-time job, and it is the task of all who believe in Christ. Christians who do not focus on maintaining their connection to the mooring of God’s Word will one day wake up and realize that their ship is out to sea, and has been for some time.

Questions for Discussion/Reflection

1. Why is it so easy to drift away?

2. What are some ways to ensure that you do not drift away from God’s truth?
