Faulty Logic “Fools say to themselves, “There is no God.” Psalms 14:1 (NET Bible)
I have decided that I no longer believe that my wife exists. First, she did not buy me a new Maserati for Christmas, which is what I really wanted. Second, the other day she had the audacity to ask me to clean up the big mess I made in the living room. Finally, there was a time a few weeks ago when I wanted to have sex but she did not want to because she was tired.
Now it may seem stupid or a bit extreme to you that I have decided to no longer believe that my wife exists just because of those things, but it really is no different than the claims of many that say that they do not believe in God for similar reasons. Often rationale such as “if there is a God why would He let children die”, “or if there is a God why doesn’t He heal everyone”, or even “if there is a God why would He send anyone to hell” are used as reasons to deny God’s existence.
That rationale, however, does not really work does it? Those people are really saying that they do not believe in God because if He does exist he would not meet their expectations, so therefore he must not exist. That type of thinking may seem to work with a God that we cannot physically see, but when we try to apply it elsewhere it proves to be foolish. Simply deciding that because my wife does not meet my expectations (realistic or not) I will no longer believe in her existence changes nothing, except maybe the possibilities that I will end up in a straight jacket. Only believing in a God that meets my expectations leaves me with a God that I created, and not a God that created me.
Well, I better end this article and get the trash taken out before I get in trouble with the woman that I no longer believe exists.
