A Guys Guide to Hebrews:
Even the Legendary Can’t Compare (3:1-18)

Every now and then someone so rarely and uniquely talented in their field comes along that even after they are dead and gone their presence always seems to be present. In American architecture the name Frank Lloyd Wright was such a person.

Wright’s legacy and influence was so vast that his innovations and style is seen in office buildings, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels, museums and many other different types of buildings. His tremendous ability as a designer was such that in 1991, some thirty-two years after his death, he was named the “greatest American architect of all time” by the American Institute of Architects. In three decades no one had even come close to exerting the level of influence and style of Frank Lloyd Wright.

To a first-century Hebrew the legendary acts of Moses hung over everything in Judaism even more than other architects were overshadowed by Frank Lloyd Wright. That is why it is so amazing that the writer of Hebrews seems to so easily believe that Moses was inferior to Jesus. The inferiority was simple. Moses was an excellent servant in the house of God (the nation of Israel). Jesus was a perfect son in the house of God. Moses might have been a legendary servant, but not matter how good the servant was he would always be inferior to the actual heir to the house.

Moses had done his part, and he had rightly been looked up to by generations of Israelites, but when the son came on the scene Moses was seen for what he truly was – a noble servant. The ironic thing about how the Israelite’s felt about Moses was that as much as they revered him, their ancestors had not followed him. Instead of listening to Moses they disobeyed God and an entire generation missed out on the promised land.

Fortunately we have been given the opportunity to obey Christ. Let us endeavor to obey better than the Israelites.

Questions for Discussion/Reflection

1. Who is someone that you look up to? How does that person compare to Jesus?

2. What are some areas of life that you struggle to be obedient to Christ?
