Making Memories The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the reputation of the wicked will rot. Proverbs 10:7 NET Bible
Since 1871 Over 17,000 players have had an at bat in major league baseball. Bill Bucker’s 2,715 hits are more than all but 55 of them. Some of the greatest players in baseball history aren’t even close to a career that prodigious. Yet Buckner is not remembers for a career that spanned two decades and included so many successful at bats.
Instead Buckner is remembered for a chilly October night in 1986 when with the game on the line he made a simple error letting a ball roll through his legs. That error played a large part in Buckner’s team, the Boston Red Sox, losing that game and eventually the World Series to the New York Mets.
Buckner is a tremendous example of what Solomon was getting at in Proverbs 10:7. A lot goes into how we are thought of and remembered by people, especially those close to us. Years worth of righteousness produce a son, husband, and father who is lovingly remembered by those closest to him. A life of wickedness on the other hand leaves the people that remember that man feeling well -- rotten.
The amazing thing is that it only takes a little bit of wickedness to undo all that righteousness. Decades worth of good can be irreplaceably marred by a few or even one foolish act. Every day we as men choose how to live. God help us not to let righteousness roll through our legs, and let the memories others have of us be a blessing.
