Life Lessons from Mighty Men - Josheb-Basshebeth

Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was head of the officers. He killed eight hundred men with his spear in one battle 2 Samuel 23:8 (NET Bible)

The Mighty Men who served Israel’s King David were an amazing group of warriors. They fought, bled, and conquered seemingly everything in their path under the leadership of Israel’s greatest king. Many of them came from humble beginnings, but their loyalty to David, and their ferocity in the heat of battle are the reason that the tales of their powerful deeds are still told thousands of years later. They were the ancient world’s Secret Service, Navy Seals, and CIA all rolled into one small group.

The first of these unique men that the Scriptures tell us about is Josheb-Basshebeth, a man whose deeds are almost as difficult to believe as his name is hard to pronounce. In truth, we really only know two things about this man. The first thing that we do know is that he was in charge. Being in charge of such a powerful group tells us something. I have been in groups of men who had all served as soldiers in wartime. I have seen that same group of men’s demeanors change completely when a decorated, battle-tested superior officer enters the room. Josheb-Basshebeth was that guy.

The second thing that we know is that he kicked major butt in battle, one battle in particular. Someway somehow eight hundred of the enemy met their demise at the point of his spear – in one battle. Conventional military wisdom has been that in hand to hand combat an attacking army had to have at least a 2-1 advantage to have any hope of success. All King David really needed was Josheb-Basshebeth.

So what does this small snippet of Josheb-Basshebeth have to teach us? The little that we know of him shows us that mighty things are possible. Often, we can become so occupied in the daily affairs and trials of life that we take all of the great things that are in our minds and spirits and we place them on a shelf where they grow moldy and dusty while we slave away in a life filled with monotony and complacency. God does not always work massive miracles, even when we have massive problems in life, but for those who pick up their spear and rush to the battle, you just might find yourself in the midst of slaying the enemy.
