The Husband’s Toughest Verse - Part 1

You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker I Peter 3:7a (NET Bible)

Every husband has at various times throughout his married become convinced that his lovely bride is insane. That is ok because at some point every wife has looked at herself in the mirror and asked herself, “Is that man crazy?”

The differences between the sexes have spawned the careers of comedians, inspired bestsellers, and given the world dozens of movies. Perhaps they are best summed up by Miami Herald Humor Columnist Dave Barry. “The difference between men and women is that, if given the choice between saving the life of an infant or catching a fly ball, a woman will automatically choose to save the infant, without even considering if there's a man on base.”

It is because the differences are so vast that the beginning of I Peter 3:7 is seemingly impossible for any man to accomplish. It is one thing to tell us to love our wives, to provide for our families, or even to sacrifice our own happiness for the woman we love. But does God actually expect us to understand our wives? The Apostle Peter was married, what in the world could he be thinking?

What the Word of God is urging here is something novel. It is asking husbands to actively listen to their wives. To study how she acts, her emotions, her personality, how she thinks, and what motivates her. It is a tremendous expectation to know one's wife, to understand her, even to be understanding with her in every way.
