The Husband’s Toughest Verse – Part 2

and show them honor as fellow heirs of the grace of life. In this way nothing will hinder your prayers.
I Peter 3:7b (NET Bible)

There is a reason that rifle scopes must be adjust two different directions. Every scope comes with two knobs; one for adjusting the scope vertically, and one for adjusting the scope horizontally. The two knobs exist so that if for example you take a shot that is low and to the left you can fix your aim by clicking the knobs up and to the right. Properly sighting the scope in both directions will ensure that your rifle shots will be on target in both directions. It wouldn’t really do a hunter any good to be on target one way, but not the other.

As husbands we must remember that we really cannot expect to be on target with God (vertically) if we fail to fulfill God’s expectations for us with our wives (horizontally). God not only expects us to make every effort to understand our wives, but we will also be held accountable for how we honor them. According to the scriptures, husbands and wives may have differing roles in a marital relationship, but that does not mean that they are not equals or that it is ok for husbands to feel or act superior to their brides.

Many Scripture verses teach that there are consequences for wrong actions. The consequences in at the end of I Peter 3:7, however, are quite unique. Failure to properly honor our wives will result in the prayers of the husband missing the target entirely. If we keep missing the target with our prayers maybe we need to focus more on our horizontal aim.
